“The world heaves with MY torment”

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a HUGE fan of anything put out or related to Blizzard Entertainment, and hope to be employed with them at some point in the future. With the release of the next expansion to Blizzard’s behemoth franchise, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm looming on the horizon (set for a December 7th release), I felt it necessary to organize a bit of a release party at a local gamer hangout/coffee bar.

After discussing some of the details, we worked out several contests, and as a prize for one of them, I am donating some Cataclysm-themed original artwork. Pictured below is the pencil work for the image. Along with a full color print of the final image, a framed set will serve as the prize for the first person to hit level 81 at the coffee bar. A sort of “race”.

For those of you who are not up-to-speed with the Warcraft universe, this is an image of the expansions main antagonist, Deathwing. An enormous black dragon who has been imprisoned deep underground for many years. However, he has broken free and has vowed to set the world of Azeroth aflame with his rage. The piece is inspired by the recently-released opening cinematic seen here.

Here’s the image inked digitally. I went a little looser with the inking on this one because I HOPE that the looseness will lead to the image having a sort of dynamic energy, I probably could have gone even looser to be honest haha. Colored version to come soon!
